Drawing upon The Historic New Orleans Collection’s rich sports-related holdings and enhanced by loans from local
collections, Crescent City Sport: Stories of Courage and Change tells 20 tales of sporting life and civic communion in
New Orleans. The story of Black Gold’s win of the 1924 Louisiana Derby will be one of the sporting events included
in the exhibit. On loan from the Kentucky Derby Museum is the 1924 Kentucky Derby replica trophy which was re-made
in 2000 and presented to the grandson (Richard Freeman) of Rosa M Hoots, the Native American Osage, who owned
Black Gold. Come visit the exhibit and learn about the life, courageous and hard scrapping victories this New Orleans
favorite had over the then-prominate eastern racing stables. Black Gold went on to win four derbies in total during his
3rd year campaign: The Louisiana, the Kentucky, Ohio and Chicago derbies. He broke down in New Orelans in Jan. 1928
and was laid to rest at the Fair Grounds Race Course and each year since 1958, the Laying the Wreath honoring him
is held with a Stakes race in his name. In 2020, the Laying of the Wreath is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 29th.

The merchandise was made available to long-time Black Gold fans throughout the day and was endorsed by CEO Emeritus, Richard W. Freeman (Grandson of Rosa Magnet Hoots). The Black Gold merchandise was made available for sale in the gift shop through the end of the meeting. Additionally, company officers announced the start of a book to tell the true story of the rich family history, dating back to the mid 1800’s through the current day saga of the family remaking a replica trophy from the 1924 Kentucky Derby and their ongoing search for the stolen trophies: The Louisiana Derby, The (Original Kentucky Derby ), The Ohio Derby and The Chicago Derby.
November 13, 2004 – Richard W. Freeman and 19 members of his immediate family escort him to Louisville, Kentucky where he donated
the 1924 Replica Kentucky Derby Trophy to the Kentucky Derby Museum. The trophy is now on display for public viewing and gives
tribute to the Indian Horse, Black Gold and his owner, an Osage Indian woman, Rosa Magnet Hoots.
“Good people leave an inheritance to their grandchildren.”
Proverbs 13:22
Rosa M. Hoots, in the Courier Journal, May 1924 stated, “I will give the trophies to my grandchildren, for
them to always keep.” While all four trophies were stolen from her home in Tulsa, OK back in 1934 or 1935, the family continues to
stay vigilant to help recover the remaining 2 trophies, [the Louisiana Derby and Ohio Derby] so this wish of hers can finally become a
reality.
In the word “GOLD” note the difference in the highlighting of the letters “GOD,” to acknowledge God’s blessings in providing the talents
and gifts with which we have been blessed.
In Osage symbology, a horizontal arrow pointing to the left stands for the energy to realize one’s wishes & ideas and can point toward a time of taking action.
