Drawing upon The Historic New Orleans Collection’s rich sports-related holdings and enhanced by loans from local
collections, Crescent City Sport: Stories of Courage and Change tells 20 tales of sporting life and civic communion in
New Orleans. The story of Black Gold's win of the 1924 Louisiana Derby will be one of the sporting events included
in the exhibit. On loan from the Kentucky Derby Museum is the 1924 Kentucky Derby replica trophy which was re-made
in 2000 and presented to the grandson (Richard Freeman) of Rosa M Hoots, the Native American Osage, who owned
Black Gold. Come visit the exhibit and learn about the life, courageous and hard scrapping victories this New Orleans
favorite had over the then-prominate eastern racing stables. Black Gold went on to win four derbies in total during his
3rd year campaign:  The Louisiana, the Kentucky, Ohio and Chicago derbies. He broke down in New Orelans in Jan. 1928
and was laid to rest at the Fair Grounds Race Course and each year since 1958, the Laying the Wreath honoring him
is held with a Stakes race in his name. In 2020, the Laying of the Wreath is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 29th.
Black Gold memorabilia will be available for sale at The Shop at The Collection throughout the exhibit.
